Each Megapen capsule contains 250 mg Ampicillin trihydrate and 250 mg cloxacillin sodium.

Megapen is an effective remedy for the following bacterial infections:

• Surgery: postoperative pulmonary infections, postoperative wound infections
• Respiratory tract infections: bronchopneumonia, chronic bronchitis
• Obstetrics: puerperal fever
• Other infections such as bone infections

The combination medicine prevents the formation of the bacterial protective covering required for the survival of bacteria. Ampicillin and cloxacillin are combined to produce effective results. This antibiotic drug usually makes you feel better within a few days of initiating the treatment but be sure to take it regularly till the prescribed period. Appropriate tests should be performed to determine the infection.   

How To Use

Megapen is a combination medicine; therefore, it is advised to take this combination antibiotic as per the prescription. You may take the capsule before or after consuming food but prefer taking it at a fixed time to ensure better efficacy. Do not consume more than prescribed by your doctor, as it may have harmful effects on your body. Complete the course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medication too early may make your symptoms return.

Precautions

Caution should be observed when administering Megapen 250 250 mg who are hypersensitive to penicillin. Before initiating therapy with Ampicillin cloxacillin, careful observation should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactams. Cross sensitivity between cephalosporins and penicillin skis is well known. Rare but serious hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with the use of this antibiotic medication. If an allergic reaction occurs, the antibiotic should be discontinued, and the appropriate therapy should be instituted. Before taking the medication, you should inform your doctor if you take any other medication for any medical condition. Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness during the treatment. The antibiotic drug does not impair your ability to drive, but you should avoid driving if you feel dizzy. To facilitate a speedy recovery, you must take adequate rest, eat a healthy diet, and drink plenty of fluids while receiving Megapen antibiotic drugs. Your doctor may perform laboratory tests to check the effects of the medicines.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Megapen 250 250 mg are usually mild and resolve within a few days of initiating the treatment. Some common side effects of the medicine are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion, etc. If any of these side effects worsen, talk to your doctor immediately. If you develop an allergic reaction with symptoms including itching, rash, swelling, or shortness of breath, you must seek immediate medical help.
