Progynova 2mg is a medication used to prevent pregnancy. Each tablet contains 2 mg of estradiol valerate. It is a hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) to treat signs and symptoms of estrogen deficiency due to menopause. Besides preventing pregnancy, contraceptive pills may make your periods irregular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and treat acne.    

Progynova 2 mg does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhoea, HIV, and chlamydia).

How To Use

Read the prescription before you start using this product. The prescription will have important information like when and how to take the tablet. If you have questions about using Progynova, please talk to your doctor. It is important to continue taking the medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. To achieve the effectiveness of contraceptives, the medicine must be taken as directed. The tablet should not be skipped or intake delayed by more than twelve hours. For patient instructions for missed pills, check with your doctor. Hormonal contraception should be stopped when hormone replacement therapy is started, and the patients should be advised to take non-hormonal contraceptive precautions if required. 

Hysterectomies (the uterus is surgically removed) patients may start at any time. If the patient is still menstruating and has an intact uterus, a Progynova and a progestogen regimen should begin within the first five days of menstruation. Women whose periods are infrequent, with amenorrhoea, or postmenopausal, may start at any time, provided pregnancy has been excluded. Women changing from other hormonal replacement therapy should complete the current cycle of therapy before initiating treatment with Progynova.

It doesn’t matter at what time of the day patient takes her tablet, but once a woman has selected a particular time.

Precautions

Progynova should not be started in the presence of the following conditions. Treatment should be stopped immediately if any of these conditions appear during hormonal replacement therapy.

  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Pregnancy or lactation
  • Known or suspected premalignant conditions or malignancies if sex steroid-influenced
  • Severe hepatic disease
  • Known or suspected cancer of the breast
  • Severe hypertriglyceridemia
  • Presence or history of liver tumours
  • Myocardial infarction, stroke, or a recent history of these conditions
  • A high risk of venous or arterial thrombosis
  • Hypersensitivity or acquired predisposition to venous thrombosis   

Progynova 2 mg cannot be used as a contraceptive. Before starting the treatment, Your doctor will consider all risk factors when determining the individual risk of treatment for the patient. 

Side Effects

The side effects of Progynova 2 mg are nausea, headache, breast tenderness, spotting or bleeding between menstrual periods. Most of these side effects are usually mild and resolve with time. Less common side effects are:  

  • Less sexual desire
  • Acne
  • Darkening of the skin, especially on the face
  • High-fat levels in the blood
  • High blood sugar, especially in women who already have diabetes
  • Depression
  • Weight changes
  • Problems tolerating contact lenses

Talk to your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself. No serious problems have been reported from a contraceptive pill overdose, even when accidentally taken by children.
